In celebration of Black History Month, OMG! Fitness held a class about how to make healthy versions of soul food classics (but really, soul food is perfect anytime). Prepping for this class I learned a lot of things I didnt know or simply took for granted. As an African American Southerner, I always assumed that soul food and southern or country cooking were one in the same - WRONG! Soul food has its origins in the Deep South (like Alabama and Mississippi), uses humble meats if any and is heavily seasoned (most prominently by salt or sugar). But why though? Slaves and then later share croppers had available to them "inferior" meats which was either already cured and too salty for regular consumption or considered not suitable to be eaten in "fine society". So African Americans took to adding those cured meats like ham hocks and salt pork to vegetables and beans to stretch its usage. Sugar which was and still is a huge cash crop would never be given out, but molasses was available to these pioneers to make still other foods edible. I said all that to say, back in the day they did the best they could with what they had yet we've grown accustomed to eating in a certain type of way and we don't have to. Because of the times that we live in now, most of us have available healthier alternatives to some of those ingredients giving us all the flavors and feelings of soul food without the issues of elevated blood sugar and high blood pressure levels! If you'd like a copy of the recipes please send me an email or leave a comment below.

I know I've been quiet recently for a wide range of things from family tragedies to life upheavals in general. But one thing that has been good is that Ive been hard at work on a podcast I share with my BFF and life coach, Teena Gillis. You will have a link for it below. Please listen and glean all sorts of gems and info from it. Let me know what you think and anything you'd like to hear about.
Im not a big social media person by any means but I would absolutely love to hear from you guys. BTW this is my confession. Ive had this site for a few years and I would love you guys to spread the word about not only the website but also the podcast. Ill give shoutouts on the cast for those of you who leave positive comments here soon this website. Mainly though, no matter where you leave in the country don't be shy to reach out. We can talk and help you overcome your food issues, develop plans for your fitness goals, and gain a new level of health and respect for food and your body.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Getting up during the night to use the bathroom becomes more common as people get older. But researchers in Japan have found a way to dry up the nightly urge to pee (and so deliver a better night’s sleep): Cut your salt intake.
A handful of OMG! Fitness divas made a road trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the 2017 Diva Run. It was an absolute blast! Check us out:
So yes, I'll readily admit it: I'm a bum. I haven't kept up with the blog in a loooong time. I hear you! My reason? Eh... The short story is, I'm a regular person. I get tired, I get distracted, I get unmotivated, I get caught up in my day to day life and put some things off that may not be high up on my priority list. Sound familiar? For a lot of us, fitness does the same thing; we'll reason that other things are way more important than working out or eating better and, before you know it, its been a year since you last did anything. So what's the solution? Admit and acknowledge your actions then try again. No one is motivated everyday but we have a chance everyday to be a little better than the day before.
March ushers in a set of new fitness classes. Each class is only 30 minutes long making it easy to fit in any schedule. Join us for fun every Saturday!
